ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses explains the foundation of Hispanic/LatinX artists in the U.S. It will also teach students about five LatinX contemporary artists who deal with issues of identity, as well as gender, racial stereotypes, cultural appropriation, and body image. Their preferred artistic materials or media include video, installation, and performance. The artists selected are internationally recognized for their contributions to discussions about the status of the LatinX community in the world today, as well as their portrayals in the media. These artists see the media as often propagating negative stereotypes of the LatinX people, while at the same time these artists utilize media to create a revised view of history and culture.
