ABSTRACT

Prior to 1900, most tree disease research was really forest mycology. The discipline had its origins in North America about 1900, in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand in the 1930s, and in parts of Africa, South America, and the Indian subcontinent mainly since the 1950s. Most forest pathologists work in North America, Europe, and Japan, with only about 15% scattered over Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, and Central and South America. Thus, the field is substantially underdeveloped in many parts of the world.
