POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews stands on the site of the former Warsaw ghetto and pre-war Jewish neighbourhood of Muranow. In the core exhibition of POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews, Jews are subjects, not objects, of history. The historical context and present reality within which this museum has been created are strikingly different from those that gave rise to the new museology in the English-speaking world and beyond. It is no accident that the new museology was given its name in English and that it arose and first took hold in the United Kingdom, in former British colonies and in other parts of the English-speaking world, first and foremost the United States. Critical museology in the rest of Europe, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany, among others responds in large measure to the cultural diversity arising from recent immigration, especially from their former colonies.
