Tracking and trailing remain a major activity of police dogs, though now surpassed by detection functions. The Military Working Dog Program provides that about one in ten military patrol dogs should be trained in tracking.1 Tracking and trailing classes are offered outside of police and military programs, and many law enforcement agencies retain private handlers and their dogs as incidents require.
