Sustainable development has been an issue and the aspiration of modern societies already for over two decades, i.e. since the United Nations General

Fundamentals,

Assembly in December 1987, and its Resolution 42/187. It is also well known that 3% of the world-wide energy is consumed by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure (out of which 80% is consumed by the base stations of mobile communication systems) which causes about 2% of the world-wide CO2 emissions. Moreover, wireless communication sector of the ICT domain that revolutionized communication between people by providing anywhere, anytime and anyhow linking is now moving to mass connections between machines. Lowering the energy consumption and related CO2 emission caused by this ubiquitous wireless communication seems to be a major challenge for the new system designers.
