ABSTRACT
This chapter is concerned with the academic discussion on Hong Kong cinema since it has become a hot topic after the unprecedented success of Bruce Lee and other Hong Kong born stars like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat and director John Woo who became household names in Hollywood from the mid-1990s. It argues that the successful globalization of Hong Kong cinema was pushed by several key figures at different stages that elevated Hong Kong cinema to different levels. Some scholars tried to breakthrough their research boundaries by integrating both textual analysis with Hong Kong’s business development. In contrast, globalization theory sheds new light on the exemplary performance of Hong Kong cinema during a pre-modern 1950s. Regionalization of Hong Kong cinema since the industry’s inception was not an accident but a necessity because of survival consideration. The nickname ‘Hollywood in the East’ did not mean that the production figures for Hong Kong were close to Hollywood.
