ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we describe immunoassay and liquid chromatography/mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) approaches for steroid hormone assessment. We compare these measurement approaches, focusing on testosterone as an illustrative case, but also discuss their role in the assessment of other steroid hormones. Consistent with the emerging consensus in the field of clinical endocrinology, where the continuation of immunoassay approaches is discouraged, we conclude that in social neuroendocrinology LC-MS assessment of steroid hormones will likely replace immunoassays in the years to come.
