ABSTRACT
China, the fastest growing economy in the world, is currently in the middle of its drive to urbanize. The main objective of urbanization is to encourage a shift in the population from rural to urban areas and from rural-based agricultural labour to mainly urban manufacturing and service sectors. Given China’s legacy of a planned economic system that limited the expansion of cities and rural to urban mobility, sustainable urbanization is particularly important in China.
