ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an example of a comprehensive integrated framework of different Human factors methods for evaluating accident scenarios. The case study demonstrates how the Human factors methods can be combined and integrated in order to provide a more exhaustive analysis of accidents occurring in complex sociotechnical systems. Methods integration has a number of compelling advantages, because not only does the integration of existing methods bring reassurance in terms of a validation history, but it also enables the same data to be analysed from multiple perspectives. These multiple perspectives, as well as being inherent in the scenario that is being described, also provide a form of internal validity. The EAST framework, e.g. takes a 'network of networks' approach to analysing activities taking place in complex sociotechnical systems. Task networks represent a summary of the goals and subsequent tasks being performed within a system.
