ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the vehicle ideation process. If a particular vehicle segment or product type has not been given or defined in the initial design brief, then the first stage is to establish an understanding of the scale and size of product that user want or need. The common term used to describe the vehicle's architecture is known as "packaging". This simply refers to how the designers have created a means to tackle three main issues: people; the stuff they need to carry and use; and the power for propelling and controlling the driving experience. Battery electric powertrain technologies offer vehicle architects a good degree of freedom for packaging. As the ideation process continues, it has to be considered how designer's occupant gets into, and has to be seen out of, the vehicle. It is also important to consider closures, apertures, and occupant vision early on as this informs the graphics and shapes of the windows and daylight openings.
