ABSTRACT
One needs to read the drama of the Symbolic, of desire, of the institution of sexual difference as a self-supporting signifying economy that wields power in the marking off of what can and cannot be thought within the terms of cultural intelligibility. Mobilizing the distinction between what is ‘before’ and what is ‘during’ culture is one way to foreclose cultural possibilities from the start.
