ABSTRACT

This chapter traces how stigma manifests through jobs that are not inherently dirty but take places within an industry which is. It explores how the stigma is mediated when the identity of the field itself is new and unstable. Ordinary jobs in pornography are stigmatized more than other sectors. Yet it can also be desirable and valuable because of the qualities distinct to the industry. As people who do dirty work are aware of the identity attached to their jobs, those in white-collar jobs in the adult industry are acutely aware of the stigmatized reputation of their industry. White-collar jobs allow some of the perceived dangerous glamour of pornography's courtesy stigma to be transferred without many of the social risks to the performers incurred. Beyond money, curiosity, and skills, the dirt of pornography is also deeply desirable to the extent that, it overcomes the fact like work indeed takes place in the industry.
