ABSTRACT

Like Corey, Devin was a popular White male athlete, who often dominated discussions in ways that excluded females and students of color. However, as we demonstrate in this profile, Devin differed from Corey, Dan, and the other male athletes in the course, as well as from Michelle, in that he was willing to critically examine discourses of race, class, and gender constituting his identity and those of the characters’ in the texts. Though he was strongly tied to his family and community world, he also possessed a strong sense of agency associated with envisioning himself as a college student who would soon be leaving his family and community worlds, fostering his engagement with the practices and perspectives operating in the course. Given this high level of engagement, Devin actively voiced discourses and cultural models operating in the class that differed from his status quo discourses, a process of appropriating new discourses that led him to engage in some institutional critiques during the course.
