ABSTRACT

Images, photographs and drawings promote deeper understanding of a concept when chosen carefully. Photographs and drawings are two ways to communicate with images. Because we believe they represent reality, photos can provide a powerful visual punch. When people find an image that suits their communication goal, the first thing they do is to find out whether this is a copyrighted or a copyright-free image. They use photographs or high-quality illustrations that add meaning to information they are communicating. Research on communicating about climate change indicates there are two broad categories of images. Some images capture attention and reinforce the sense that climate change is significant. Others promote a feeling of efficacy, a sense of being able to take action. Computer graphics can be produced in either raster or vector format. Raster images are composed of pixels or tiny squares, each one coded with a particular color. Vector images are created by mathematical formulas that define geometric shapes.
