ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with young adults, and particularly those who are students. There are two reasons for the focus on students. Firstly, post-compulsory education in Britain is an important life juncture for young adults and, particularly for Higher Education study, commonly represents leaving the family or parental home for the first time. Young adults are the most mobile population group and within that group students are highly mobile; thus, this chapter examines ethnic differences in mobility amongst the most mobile section of the population. Secondly, it has been shown elsewhere that residential mobility is differentially associated with being a student across ethnic groups. In particular, students of some ethnic groups are more mobile than their non-student counterparts while students of other groups are less mobile. Hence the final section discusses the implications of the results for minority internal migration research, for ethnic inequality and integration and for student choice in the changing environment of British Higher Education.
