ABSTRACT

Stimulus conditions (or activating events) are situations in which the client encounters stimuli that are likely to trigger alcohol use. The nature of these stimuli can vary considerably, but they broadly fall into two categories: internal (e.g. low mood) and external (e.g. a pub). It is important to begin by explaining to the client that ``a stimulus condition is any situation that poses a threat to your sense of control and increases the risk of using alcohol''.
