ABSTRACT

We now turn to the centrepiece of this book and our review of the evidence on the role of education in the intergenerational transfer of success. As we described in detail in Chapter 3, our framework for conceptualising the influence of parents’ education is based on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model of human development, which, at its centre, is based around the daily interactions that support, sustain or hinder development. We therefore begin our evaluation of the theory and evidence of the family-level influences on children’s school achievement with these proximal family processes.
