ABSTRACT

We offer this chapter as an antidote to the “group frenzy” that has seized the business world. We begin by showing evidence of this frenzy. Then, we demonstrate the critical role played by individuals in groups from the points of view of the need for group member ability, the role of individual champions in organizational change, and the importance of whistleblowers. Next, we document the dangers of groups, including conformity, social loafing, and groupthink. We conclude by reiterating the importance of independent thought on the part of each individual and make some recommendations for the design of effective groups.
