ABSTRACT

This chapter reports progress to date on two school improvement projects which attempt to use an approach based on organisation development. In Hammersmith and Fulham, a pilot project, 'Schools Make A Difference', ran between January 1993 and December 1994. It was London Education Authority-led and involved all eight secondary schools in the borough. The findings from the diagnostic questionnaire and the interviews provide a detailed portrayal of the school's climate and culture, and are used to devise the implementation strategy. On the basis of the information obtained from the staff, together with the requirements of the head and senior management team, the consultants then drew up an implementation strategy. The Consultancy Research Evaluation and Training in Education (CREATE) approach, while it has some of the characteristics of these initiatives, is more like the school improvement projects mounted in the USA, and employs a process derived from organisation development.
