ABSTRACT

This chapter will concentrate on sexual identity based therapy groups in university counseling centers, with emphasis on validating and welcoming all social identities that students hold. Due to isms that exist in many minority communities (e.g. racism within the queer community, heterosexism in Black and Brown communities), it is critical that group therapists approach their work with cultural humility. This chapter offers suggestions on how to incorporate cultural humility into sexual identity based groups, recruit members, address microaggerssions, and provides a case example. The suggestions offered in this chapter may also be adapted to some outpatient settings.
