ABSTRACT

Militarization, relates to incompatibilities within societies. Obviously, there are many different incompatibilities, and the road from incompatibility to militarization is by no means linear. Incompatibilities can exist in a society without resulting in conflict, indeed, incompatibilities might not even be thought of as but rather as a "normal state of affairs" or as "problems" rather than incompatibilities. Theoretically, the resolution of an incompatibility is only a matter of imagination as most incompatibilities also include points of compatibility. For instance, conflict resolution assumes that the parties agree on what the conflict is really about, which, in turn, might be determined by the parties' philosophy as well as ultimate aims. The problem becomes more delicate in confrontations between military and civilian forces, such as in confrontations between a military regime and the civil opposition. Modern history has many examples of a gradual or rapid withdrawal of military leadership from goverment power.
