ABSTRACT
This chapter describes how Independent Living Centres (ILCs) can be used as a parallel resource for rehabilitation engineering by presenting information about ILCs and their network. ILCs were designed and developed to enable persons with disabilities to live independently in their communities. People with disabilities are heavily involved in ILCs. The majority of ILCs do not provide rehabilitation engineering services, but do provide services that can be combined with rehabilitation engineering to maximize independent living. ILCs are a new and novel type of service centre. The independent living philosophy and services model is designed to enable ILC consumers to select their independent living goals and to take responsibility for becoming independent. ILCs vary like all service agencies, but they also have some common features. Some ILCs have administrators and staffs who work only on the community option development. Other ILCs combine the community option development and independent living services components.
