Independent institutions, when compared with commerce and government, seem at first glance not to have any powerful driving force. The other two sectors have obvious energy sources. In the commercial sector, the motivation is the desire for profit. In the government sector, the motivation is the desire for power. But in the independent sector, the motivation, in its purest form, is the desire to serve others. Few see that the independent sector even now carries on a major part of the nation's public business, and that it can do much more. And if the desire for political power inspires politicians to work in the independent sector to earn respect and votes, the independent sector gains added strength. The liberal press has been dumfounded by the power of the conservative movement among young people and among responsible community leaders.
