ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses those writers who choose to remain independent, and who choose to handle their own publishing activities. For every songwriter, there is always a fundamental career question about whether to enter into a publishing deal. As an independent writer, it becomes much more important to learn how to market and expose your songs, without the benefit of the expertise, clout, and financial resources of a publishing company. Owning the publishing rights to a song only becomes meaningful when someone is able to use that song to manage or create revenue.
