ABSTRACT

Communist regimes in the Eastern bloc marked the beginning of a new era for Greece's own labor market. With the dawning of the 1990s, this small South Mediterranean nation rapidly transformed into a fast-paced thoroughfare of migrant interchange. At the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa, Greece is becoming nowadays more complex with a remarkable mix of nationalities and skill levels. Traditionally, migration into the Mediterranean has tended to focus on north-south flows. Recently though new flows had to be accommodated while the other type flows continue. The Hellenic Migration Policy Institute (IMEPO) has stepped up to the challenge through information distribution highlighting legal advice on matters of entrepreneurship and self-employment while only recently two schemes have come to the forefront as concerted efforts to facilitate entrepreneurship in general. The great majority of the female immigrant entrepreneurs declared that they came to Greece with companions of which 39 percent were family members.
