ABSTRACT

First published in The Indicator, II, 21 March 1821, pp. 191–2. By March of 1821, persisting illness and the burden of maintaining two periodicals finally forced Hunt to give up The Indicator. His jovial leave taking, reminiscent of his farewell to readers of The News in December 1807 (Vol. 1, pp. 21–3), features the same kind of sociality, tolerance and outgoing sympathy, even for his detractors, that had become hallmarks of his journalistic demeanour and his political philosophy. Hunt’s farewell is preceded in this issue of The Indicator by numerous extracts, the ‘above passages’ mentioned in the opening sentence, from English Renaissance drama. For details on the history and structure of The Indicator, see headnote above, pp. 222–4.
