ABSTRACT

An examination of the records of children rated as unsatisfactory in their foster homes revealed that the causes of maladjustment between the child and the foster parent, though diverse, could be divided roughly into three classes: maladjustment due to the child, to the foster parents, and to both child and foster parents. Among the ten foster homes were some that would have made quite successful billets for easier children, but in which the foster mother had not the ability or the inclination to deal with special problems. When an assessment had been made of the relationship established between the evacuated children and their foster homes, it was thought that some more personal information of value and interest might be gained by interviews with some of the children individually. With the corresponding control group this gave a total of 80 children who were tested as well as being personally interviewed.
