ABSTRACT

An important consequence of the division of reproductive roles in social insects is that both individual and group selection are involved in their evolution. The reproducers are directly affected in their reproductive function by individual selection. The study of individual behavioral repertoires does not produce a satisfactory comparative characterization of the species. Perhaps a better method is to study how the behavior of the individual is integrated into the organization of the society. The sytematic scanning method used is based on an analysis of the behavior of individual ants aimed at revealing the collective functioning of the society. The systematic study of individual behavior allows to investigate the mechanisms of social regulation in the light of the role and variation of the individual. The behavioral evolution of an individual is generally correlated with the progressive maturation of anatomical and physiological features. The reintroduced ant shows high levels of inactivity and a low level of nursing behavior towards the brood.
