ABSTRACT

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disorder that may affect any portion of the urinary tract.

Bladder infections include uncomplicated cystitis, recurrent uncomplicated cystitis, complicated cystitis, pyocystitis, and emphysematous cystitis.

Kidney infections include acute and chronic pyelonephritis, acute lobar nephronia, pyonephrosis, emphysematous pyelonephritis, xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, and renal abscesses.

Prostatitis may be acute, chronic, chronic non-bacterial (i.e. chronic pelvic pain syndrome), and asymptomatic.

Pregnant women should be screened and treated for asymptomatic bacteriuria.

Candida is the most common fungal infection of the urinary tract. In addition to antifungal therapy, symptomatic infections should be treated with removal or replacement of urinary tract hardware.

Atypical infections of the genitourinary (GU) tract include tuberculosis (TB), schistosomiasis, echinococcosis, and filariasis.
