ABSTRACT

By definition, research and development always occurs in the context of an organization. As a result, there are many additional influences that are external to the individual that affect research and development. Chapter 3 described what goes on inside the individual (internal influences) in order to solve problems. This chapter accounts for the influences that are external to the individual which also affect problem solving. Those influences include issues that pull and tug on research and development teams, the processes that organizations follow and the manner in which teams interact with others who have a say in the development process. This sets the stage for Chapter 5’s introduction of human factors research methods.
