ABSTRACT

The geographical evolution of the economy requires reproduction of the existing structure as well as change. Both ordering within and variety outside the constraints are involved and are measured by entropy. Equiprobability, independence, compartmentalization and alphabet size are examined, sometimes in game theory terms. Evolution is a continual throwing up of possible innovations in spatial economic organization, those accepted increasing income. Entropy of inefficiency is thus maintained, freedom of choice in consumption replacing choice in activity. Innovations covarying in space-time with the existing structure are likely to be accepted. Communications theory can express these ideas.
