ABSTRACT
Most conservation work with lasers is approached empirically. However, there are good reasons to enquire about what mechanisms are operating when material is removed from the artefact surface. Surprisingly, there is still a shortage of knowledge about what is actually taking place when an art object is cleaned by laser.
