ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces a resilience evaluation method which assesses the impact of re-use interventions based on the expected impact by users and the maximum rate of transformation with reversibility. It provides a review of recent actions, including recommendations, guidelines, best practices and case studies to highlight specific components of risk management methodologies that should be integrated preventive and planned conservation strategies for built heritage. The book provides several arguments to move towards a more systemic vision which takes into account interoperability, long-term planning, a link with the surrounding environment and local economy. It also provides a review of standards European historic universities to highlight current trends which require the reduction of office space, the growing need to improve the efficiency of available spaces and ensuring the maximum compatibility between function and space.
