ABSTRACT

In literature, insects usually are given human qualities: abilities to think and to talk, and different other human characteristics. The insects are widely present both in feature and animated films. Insects are widely represented in music also, with varying degrees of prominence. In some musical compositions, the insects are only mentioned, while in others they are minor characters. The interactions between people and insects were also embodied in pictorial art. Initially, these were the cave paintings of primitive people, such as the cave paintings in Cuevas de la Arafna en Bicorp in Valencia, Spain. Dicke found that the images of insects were more often found on Dutch still lifes of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as in surrealistic pictures and works performed in the modernist style. Images of insects are not common in heraldry. Where they are used, their heraldic meaning reflects the qualities and signs of particular insects.
