ABSTRACT

Perhaps the most succinct definition of personality comes from the saying “wherever you go, there you are.” Everyone has a personality style that is made up of personality traits or individualized patterns of behavior, attitudes, and emotions developed early in life in response to the challenges of living. Inherent in these patterns is the potential for flexibility of response, but there is also predictability. People are recognizable from situation to situation and across time (Heim & Westen, 2005; Millon, 1981; Millon & Davis, 1996; Oldham, 2005). Derksen (1995) suggests that the building blocks of the personality are biological, physiological, and genetic influences combined with temperament, environment, and experience.
