ABSTRACT

The formal integration of risk management into underground works began in France in the early 2000s. A dedicated AFTES Working Group focused on the issue of geotechnical risk assessment and management. It also worked on a catalogue of risk categories to be addressed in construction contracts, as well as on the improvement of contractual practices. At the same time, official guidelines on public procurement have made the implementation of Risk Management Plans (RMPs) mandatory in France since 2013. Over the last 10 years, around 20 contracts have been implemented for underground projects, and Owners, Engineering companies and Contractors are now familiar with the approach. Since 2017, an AFTES Committee has been created with the scope to collect, organize and share among all professionals the feedback of the use of risk management in such projects. AFTES is convinced that the sharing of this feedback will be useful for the international community.
