ABSTRACT

We review theory and research on distributive justice and social exchange across three different paradigms, the Justice Standards approach (on equity, need, and equality norms), a “thin” version of Fiske’s Relational Models theory, and the Social Values Orientation approach. We contend that these theories rarely directly conflict; rather, they differ in emphasis and coverage and as such can be profitably integrated. We identify points of overlap and sketch out properties required for a more comprehensive core theory.
