ABSTRACT

The case at Lund University, Sweden is outlined using a socio-cultural approach that discerns a trajectory that may serve as an example useful to those currently planning professional development for doctoral supervisors. An early stage of enthusiasm was followed by a stage of formalism of supervisor training. In the subsequent stage of normalisation supervisor training became accepted and appreciated, although course contents largely remained generic. However, as research education is now becoming increasingly diverse, there is an urge to integrate supervisor development in local research contexts, i.e. to “go local” (stage of integration).
