ABSTRACT

Intelligent user-interface is a necessity for the success of expert systems. Issues such as user requirements, user model, and system model have been given insufficient attention in the development of majority of many such systems – particularly those for engineering applications. This paper discusses the requirements, the benefits, and the problems of building intelligent user-interfaces for expert systems. The notions of a user model and system model are discussed and their impact on the success of intelligent user-interfaces considered. The paper concludes with a description of the user-interface developed for an expert system prototype for preliminary seismic design of reinforced concrete buildings.
