ABSTRACT

Responsible leadership is a term that incorporates an elevated emphasis on ethical business practice. An organisation’s purpose is its rationale for existing. This is different from a mission statement which is more related to the business that the organisation is in. This chapter provides a brief overview of definitions and discussions with some consideration of how internal communication both shapes, and is shaped, by culture. Organisational culture is a large field of study in its own right and is used by managers in various ways. The term ‘strategy’ is widely used in organisations, and corporate strategy is generally understood to be a process that is connected to an organisation’s survival and success. The chapter explores leadership, organisational purpose and values, culture and strategy and discussed the ways they are currently understood and applied. It argues that leadership and purpose entails organisations looking beyond financial business objectives to wider responsibilities to society.
