ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book fosters curiosity about tears in therapy and reflects on the very nature of connection, attachment, caregiving, authenticity, inter subjectivity, disclosure, and mechanisms of change in our unique and most intimate of professions. It provides an overview of what exactly crying is, and how it manifests in the therapy room. The book outlines understanding of crying in general and therapist crying in therapy specifically and focuses on the current state of research on crying. It uses clinical vignettes to illustrate a theme related to therapists' tears and explores various lenses through which people may understand therapists' tears. The book provides an orientation to its "lens" and then describes the way in which this lens helps us to understand therapist crying. It addresses the clinical supervision and training on the topic of therapists' tears.
