ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the growing grassroots movement against fossil fuels. It discusses the negative environmental and human consequences of civilization's addiction to coal, oil, and natural gas. Under President Donald J. Trump and a Republican Congress, for example, the policy impact of anti-fossil fuel mobilization at the federal level is bound to be limited. The calculated shaming strategy should be pursued in tandem with broader coalition-building efforts around feasible and pragmatic alternatives to fossil fuels. The goal of anti-fossil fuel activists is to stigmatize the industry and remove the "social license to pollute" that has allowed the fossil fuel industry to reap tremendous profits at the expense of human societies and nature. The economic and political activities of the fossil fuel industry have indisputable negative ecological effects. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
