ABSTRACT

I shall maintain in the next two sections that even if the authors’ construction were plausible with these two assumptions-in other words, even if my arguments in the previous chapter are without any force at all-a correct analysis shows that once the assumptions are relaxed the construction falls to the ground completely. Then in the last section I shall raise the more general question whether an assumption or universal self-interest is an appropriate psycho logical foundation upon which to raise a political theory.
