Introduction

This introduction presents some key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the major theoretical concepts that constitute the basic premises on which the study is taken forward. It identifies the language as one of the cardinal sites through which the increased sexual visibility can be traced and analysed. The book proposes that explicit visibility of sexuality was sanitised through these neologisms by the journalistic media, though this has been in several ways subverted by various groups offering resistance as in the case of mimicry thus making the discourse around sexuality complex and layered. It takes forward the discussion on the enhanced visibility of sexuality as analysed through language, literature and cultural forms such as mimicry. It also takes a look at one of the most familiar figures/events of sexuality in the post-1990s era, Nalini Jameela, whose life narratives inaugurated the emergence of vibrant debates on sexual morality.
