ABSTRACT

There is a general lack of information about how qualitative research synthesis is undertaken, so in this chapter, we articulate processes for analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data. The steps of moving from analysis to synthesis and on into interpretations often are found to be complex and demanding. In order to help ensure this process is as straightforward as possible, this chapter offers an approach for undertaking this task. While we demonstrate it as a structured process here, it is important to note that we advocate, as do others, what is in many ways an ‘iterative process of thinking, interpreting, creating, theorizing and reflecting’ (Paterson et al., 2001: 112). Figure 4.1 provides an overview of the processes we outline in this chapter. Figure 4.1 The processes involved in research synthesis. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780203497555/a8799528-cafe-41aa-86cf-bc9d78f1470d/content/ch4_page57-01_B.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
