ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes about the education system, the frontier on which the crucial battle of democracy— that for equality of opportunity— is continuously fought. Understanding of this problem has grown; the education service has felt the need to step across its traditional boundaries to give children an equal chance at school. The book explains the practical issues arising from this. Change is part of lives today, and much of the book discusses the subject to rapid and far-reaching change. Structural changes in all the social services may be long overdue, but no one should imagine that they will in themselves solve the problems. The book also presents a picture of the evolving scene, to consider essence rather than accident, and to look towards the future.
