ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on collective pride and collective emotion are discussed in order to frame the focus on collective pride and it includes: the importance of extending research on individual and group-based pride. Collective pride is a widespread emotion that usually occurs in a group when group members celebrate positive features of their collective identity and are successful against other nations in, hopefully peaceful, competitive situations. As a complex emotional phenomenon experienced by a wide range of groups, collective pride can be analysed and understood from multiple theoretical perspectives. In contrast to collective pride, individual pride research is well established. Individuals appraise their behaviour or actions as according with internalized standards, rules or goals and pride seems to include judgements about the consistency of one's behaviour with a valued identity.
