ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the Iqwaye numerical series and describe the manner in which it is generated on human fingers and toes. This is, in a nutshell, their counting system within which is present the category of number understood most simply as a systematic expression of determinate multiplicities of things. focuses upon the Iqwaye view of the cosmos to examine the logical structure of the numerical series in relation to an icon of the cosmic totality and the principles of its generation. The Iqwaye are one of the five territorial groups of the Yagwoia tribe occupying the mountainous south-western interior of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Their language is Papuan and belongs to the Anga language family. It is spoken by approximately 9,000 people, of whom the Iqwaye total some 2,500. Administratively, they belong to the West Menyamya Census Division, itself a part of the Menyamya District in the very heart of Angan region.
