ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a new analysis of the gender political cleavage and shows that gender and homosexuality attitudes are linked at the micro level. At the macro level, sex as a cleavage is strongly embedded in culture and civilisation. The chapter poses a few elementary questions concerning the occurrence of sex as a cultural cleavage in advanced societies. Gender empowerment measure (GEM) and Gender-related development index (GDI) take into account a number of aspects of the position of women in society. These two indices show a coherent country variation that expresses the overall development of the status of women in society: the more of gender development, the more of women empowerment. The findings from the regression analysis suggest that value orientations of self-expression and secular rational values go together with gender equality orientations. Value change is a fundamental force behind politics and the making of new public policy.
