ABSTRACT
Women in every culture and historical period have used abortion to control their fertility. It may seem surprising that Latina women, including Puerto Rican women, have abortions at a rate one and a half times as high as non-Latinas. Many Puerto Rican women believe that they must conceal an unplanned pregnancy and an abortion from family members out of respect for these family members. For many Puerto Rican women, the cultural story is about virginity, family, motherhood, and male dominance. Women’s beliefs about relationships, children, and careers shaped, and were shaped by, the abortion experience. Some women take their right to a safe, legal abortion for granted, while others may be affected by the intense social controversy generated by this issue. Feminism as a political movement and feminist scholarship have been strengthened by critiques of previously excluded women, especially women of color and lesbians.
